As reputation and media lawyers, we support our clients in managing the reputation crises which can engulf almost any business, often at short notice.  Typically, we will advise on the legal options in dealing with the media and the online platforms, to ensure that our clients are in a position to maximise their legal leverage.  But we will not just be working 'in the moment'.  We will also be factoring in potential risk areas further down the line, whether legal (e.g. future litigation), reputational (how a company responds to an issue often says more about it than the issue itself) or commercial.

Almost invariably, this means working closely with our clients' in-house and external communications teams.  That doesn't just mean redlining draft media statements; it means understanding the importance of landing comms messaging, and how media outlets are likely to react to legal responses.  Often, it means taking a wider risk-based view.

Sometimes it is necessary to take a more visible role, engaging with the media outlets and their lawyers, to ensure that coverage does not cross the legal or regulatory line.

And after the dust has settled, we help to manage any fallout from the crisis, for example ensuring that any unlawful misinformation is taken down and the record set straight.  Ultimately, it is usually more important for the business to win in the court of public opinion, than to notch up a legal victory in a court of law.
